One hour north of The Golden Gate Bridge, the Historic Continental Inn overlooks Scenic Highway One at the center of Tomales, a charming, rural West Marin community (pop. 220, elev. 43).  Nestled five miles inland from family-owned, dog-friendly Dillon Beach and Tomales Bay where succulent oysters always have been harvested, the town of Tomales also boasts a mere half hour drive to protected natural sanctuary, Point Reyes National Seashore

Facades around Tomales’ main crossroads (where Highway One intersects Dillon Beach Road) remain true to their original 19th century Victorian “coast frontier” character.  The general store still sells a bit of everything, and the jewel-like Church of the Assumption still crowns the same knoll as it did in 1860.  On side streets, plants hang above the squeaky porches of quaint Queen Anne cottages laced by charming white picket fences.  But it is the handsome, historic Continental Inn cornering the town’s main intersection that commands center front stage!  The Continental Inn, Tomales’ very first hotel built in the mid-1850's, was professionally restored in 1989 but retains its original charm and ambience.

The two-storey Inn boasts 5,600 "finished" square feet with another 1,700 "unfinished" square feet on its third, top floor.  Typifying classic 19th century hotels, the Inn distinguishes itself from most of its competitors in that it still includes retail spaces that may be leased out to businesses.  (Most small inns today offer only guest rooms.)  Nineteenth century hotels traditionally provided street-level retail spaces with guest accommodations located on more quiet, upper storeys.  The turn-of-the-century Continental Inn continues this long hospitality tradition and provides opportunities for an owner to earn extra monthly rental income from a variety of mixed-use sources/profit centers, not just from nightly rental of guest suites.

Guests access the classic ivory-hued Inn via the main corner entry – a crimson double door – that faces the junction of Highway One -- also known as Maine Street -- and Dillon Beach Road at the center of Tomales.  An inviting, sun-drenched lobby sports traditional Reception Desk and an array of Victorian-style furnishings. To the rear of the front Lobby Reception Desk, innkeepers quarters, laundry, half bath for staff, kitchen facilities and interior corridor leading to retail spaces are found. Light-drenched second storey guest suites are uniquely furnished with private baths; all are convenient to an informal, self-serve breakfast buffet.

To the left of the Inn’s Main Lobby entrance, an separate “Pacific Coast Highway” exterior entry opens to an office/retail space with bath. Along Dillon Beach Road, yet another exterior entry opens to a second office/retail space. Approved curbside parking is available for office/retail tenants and their customers.  The Inn further boasts "permitted" off-street parking for hotel guests.

Californians always have been compelled by the allure of the Coast, forever finding cooling sea breezes welcome escape from summer inland heat.  Too, Californians always have sought out the Coast for rejuvenating refuge from urban stress.  Increasingly, the same California Coast is becoming a mecca for international marine research and nature conservancy organizations dedicated to protecting and preserving California’s treasured Coast.

The Continental Inn provides sunny, unpretentious, clean, comfortable, quiet and safe lodging along scenic Highway One in rural West Marin County – a perfect year-round, sojourn north of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge.  The Continental Inn offers a rare opportunity to aspiring innkeepers and investors alike who understand the perennial "destination" value of the Coast and wish to take an active hospitality ownership role that allows for quality, responsible growth along Marin’s idyllic Pacific Coast.
